In order to reintroduce questions concerning the transcendent nature of architecture in the academy, ISSA proposes a series of projects that will help to build an international community of scholars and students.

These projects will provide forums for the scholarly exchange of ideas, are intended to promote excellence in scholarship, and will provide students of architecture and religious studies with regular opportunities to engage in these concerns through juried competitions.

Several of these programs are envisaged as endowed projects.

Please contact us if you wish to make a major gift to endow a program.

The projects to be funded are:

  • Sponsored scholarship programs for studies in sacred architecture through design and research paper competitions:

    • Annual student design competition for sacred architecture, e.g., cathedral, cemetery, monastery, mosque, parish church, pilgrimage shrine, retreat center, site memorial, synagogue, temple, wayside chapel, etc.

    • Annual history/theory/criticism student research paper competition.

  • Hosted annual conferences on thematic topic of sacred architecture.

    • Sponsored annual lecture from senior scholar (similar to Gifford Lectures) on topic of sacred architecture, to be published as monographs.

    • Presentation of student research papers.

    • Exhibit of student design competition entries.

    • Publication of conference proceedings in annual journal.

  • Sponsored teaching, research, and publications.

    • Named Chairs in Sacred Architecture at designated institutions.

    • Sponsored graduate student research assistant positions at designated institutions.

    • Underwriting publications in sacred architecture.

  • Advisory to Ecclesiastical bodies for architectural design standards and projects.

  • Design sourcing for architectural projects of all denominations and faiths.
